Aerated Static Pile Systems - Large
(40+ Horses)
|
Sonoma Valley Stables - Petaluma,
California
40 horses on wood pellet bedding
This Aerated Static Pile (ASP) compost system uses a 4-pipe
system to process the manure and bedding produced in one month.
While one pile is "cooking" an adjoining pile is
being constructed and at the end of the month, the blower
is simply moved over and the process is repeated. The finished
compost is sold to the neighboring vineyards for use as a
top dressing / mulch for weed control and to provide both
macro- and micro- nutrients. |

Santa Lucia Farm - Santa Inez,
California
150-200 horses on wood pellet bedding
This ASP Compost System serves a large equine veterinary clinic
and breednig farm. The manure is placed in large compost bays,
each with a 120 to 150 cubic yard capacity. This finished
compost is utilized on neighboring farms and vineyards. |
|
Eden Farms - Snohomish, Washington
55 horses on wood pellet bedding
Eden Farm constructed a top-down ASP Compost System using
"ecology blocks" for both the back retaining wall
and the side walls. Pipes are placed on the floor of the system
and the blower is attached at the front when the bay is full.
After approximately 30 days, the pipes are pulled out from
under the compost pile with a farm tractor. Eden Farm is currently
testing a mix of compost and wood shavings as stall bedding. |
|
Farm Hill - Brush Prairie, Washington
45 horses on wood pellet bedding
Farm Hill utilizes the ASP method of composting to eliminate
the impacts previously experienced with direct land application
and long-term stockpiling. All of the material being produced
is being sold through a compost broker to neighboring homeowners
and commercial properties. |

from the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center and composts in a
one-acre greenhouse in the Salinas Valley. It is screened
and blended with yard debris compost and sold throughout the
Monterey Bay and South San Francisco Bay areas. |

Middleton Meadows Farm –
Davison, Michigan
24 horses on sawdust bedding
This is a simple aerated status pile system that is constructed
in one of the farm’s pastures. They hold onto the manure
for three to four months and then construct a single pile
that starts out at ~200 cubic yards. Finished compost is sold
to local landscapers and homeowners for use in garden areas. |
