The compost system at Patterson Creek is a large “Ecology Block” bay system. This was a retrofit of a compost bay system without aeration that simply didn’t work well. The area was cleared and crushed rock was compacted to create a firm, non-yielding surface. The block walls were placed on the crushed rock and assembled to their full height, and then a concrete slab was poured with two aeration channels per bay. This compost system processes the manure and bedding from 24 horses and the finished product is used on a neighboring organic farm.
