Imke M. lives in a city with little to no support for dumping manure, so aerated composting seemed like the only "green" solution for her. Currently, Imke doesn't use stall bedding and, since bedding can be an important component to the compost mix, she mixes leaves and shavings from a local sawmill into the pile instead. She plans to use the finished compost as bedding and as topsoil for a neighboring urban air strip. Temperatures in Anchorage can reach between 25 and -10 degrees Fahrenheit (and winters are 7-8 months long), so she has taken extra steps to keep the bins from freezing: 2" foam insulation on three sides and a 3' x 5' power blanket to defrost the frozen manure before aeration begins.
