What Size System Do I Need?

Frequently Asked Questions

The size of one of our equestrian compost systems is based on the projected monthly volume of manure plus stall bedding that is generated. Once that has been calculated, the other important factors (bin size, number of bins, and the structure footprint) can also be determined.

Manure Volume

Using a fairly reliable rule of thumb, each average size (1,100-1,200 lb) horse generates ~1 cubic yard of manure / month. Add to this the amount of stall bedding to estimate the total volume per horse. We adjust this rule of thumb value upwards for larger horses (e.g., Clydesdales and Friesians) and downwards for smaller horses (e.g., ponies and minis).

When shavings are used stall bedding, we multiply the manure volume by 2, and with wood pellets or hemp, we multiply the manure volume by 1.5. For example, a 6-horse facility that uses shavings will generate roughly 12 cubic yards of waste per month.

Bin Sizes

An 8' x 8' x 4'H bin will accommodate ~10 cubic yards. If we increase the wall height to 6', the same 8' x 8' bin will accommodate ~15 cubic yards.

Number of Bins

For clients that do not experience extended periods of freezing weather (say, 2-3 months) we recommend a 3-bin system. For this example, the first is being filled; the second is actively composting; and the third is curing. When the first bin is near capacity, the cured compost is removed from the third bin, and that bin is prepared to receive fresh manure. In this way, composting becomes a simple 1-2-3 process.

For northern equestrian facilities that experience extended periods of freezing weather, we recommend a 4-bin system to provide additional storage capacity.

Structure Footprint Example

For a 3-bin system with 8' x 8' bins, the overall footprint will be about 25' x 10'. The roof drip-line will be somewhat larger than the bins, say 28' wide by 12-15' deep.
